Structuring of a collective sector around wild blueberries
The Syndicat Mixte du Puy Mary wishes to promote an emblematic fruit of its mountains, the wild bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus). The structuring of a collective sector should enable better control of the picking, processing and distribution of this fruit with its recognised virtues.
Project
Work in partnership with the Natural Parks of the Massif Central and the Conservatoire d’Espaces Naturels Auvergne on appropriate methods for the maintenance and regeneration of blueberry moors (grazing, crushing, eco-building, etc.) is underway. Good agro-pastoral management on the scale of the Grand Site will thus encourage the development of wild blueberries in certain areas.
The creation of a collective chain around the wild bilberry would be a source of significant added value for farmers. The production of new farm products based on bilberries, sold on markets and in shops in the area, could be a remarkable contribution to the gastronomic heritage of the Canton.
The state of progress
Meetings bringing together players in the blueberry sector in the Massif Central have already taken place. The aim of these meetings has been to draw up an updated portrait of the sector in the Massif Central and to define work paths. For the Syndicat Mixte du Puy Mary, it is now a question of analysing the characteristics of the local bilberry, and of bringing together the stakeholders of the territory around the same project of structuring and development of the sector.
