Requalification of watering points
The Syndicat Mixte du Puy Mary is currently carrying out a project to requalify the watering points on the area’s summer pastures.
Project
This project involves the renovation or construction of around 20 watering points over the next three years. It aims to preserve the biodiversity of the wetlands of the Grand Site de France Puy Mary – Volcan du Cantal and to control water resources. Water, which is now so important for all farmers, is increasingly irregular and scarce.
In addition to the climatic challenge, the requalification of watering points will make it possible to better protect herds from parasites, limit trampling areas, and improve the physicochemical and microbiological qualities of the watercourses.
Syndicat Mixte du Puy Mary works with the Conservatoire d’Espace Naturel and the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d’Auvergne so that they can share their experience on the subject and accompany the Grand Site in the realisation of worksites.
The state of progress
As a result of the pastoral survey, several pastoral areas with a lack of watering places have now been identified. At the same time, the Syndicat Mixte du Puy Mary is directly questioning livestock farmers in the area so that they can raise their needs regarding the requalification of watering points. The results of the pastoral survey will then be linked to the plots of land designated by the farmers in order to establish the zones to be prioritized.
Summer 2021: a first watering point on Thiézac has been redeveloped.
